The traditional Southern California method: layers of hot asphalt and felt built up to form the waterproof base under the tile. How long it lasts depends on the installation and the rest of the shower assembly rather than on the method by itself. A custom tile pan with a sheet or liquid membrane is what you want under a curbless or oversized shower.

It looks better, it is easier to clean, and it stays usable as people age. It also costs more, because the floor has to drop so the pan can slope while the finished floor stays level, and the waterproofing has to be right across a larger area. It is a good decision made early and an expensive one made late.
