Outdoor living starts with the parts that do not appear in the finished photograph: drainage, structure, shade, gas and electrical runs, and the transition back into the house. Those get planned with the patio, the kitchen, and the hardscape, because they are the parts that are expensive to revisit.
The work runs the same way the inside of the house does. Layout and site conditions come first, the utilities and structure follow the layout, and the materials are selected against both rather than chosen from a photograph and fitted in afterwards.
